In my otium I've realized that you can't build much anymore, hence my equipment here at this QTH is from commercial production, a sad, but quite commen development in HAM environment.
I do though, at all times, recommend rookies to get involved in the technical aspects, and build themselves some simple equipment, which is the most challenging part of our hobby.
